Check Out Your Crawl Space

ACCA Basement Systems does not just do basements, but ACCA waterproofs crawl spaces as well.
The effects of Groundwater in dirt crawl spaces can cause a big problem in your house.  The earth is damp, in crawl spaces that are dirt; your crawl space will never be completely dry.  As a homeowner, you can never dry the earth.  If you have a dirt crawl space, water vapor will most likely coming from your crawl space, and going into your home.  The Groundwater can seep and run through many crawl spaces, the water will probably not directly affect your house, but the water in the air will.
Groundwater can seep into your crawl space causing in to seep into your home.  The water can go through cracks in poured walls.  It can also go right through brick walls and under the footing.  If the water is not noticed it can sit there in puddles.  If water is just sitting in a puddle in your crawl space the damp air will go up into your house which is similar to the Stack Effect that was talked about in another post.
Make sure you look at your crawl space to see if it is a dirt crawl space, or you can call the experts at ACCA to take a look at it.  There could be a problem even if you can not see it.  ACCA will do a FREE inspection of your crawl space!

Pest Control, 4 dollars? Yeah Right.

Pete and Doris' Business Cards
Can you imagine a time where hiring Pest Control services would cost you 4-5 dollars?  ACCA can reminder, when ACCA Companies started their most expensive client was at 8 dollars and 45 cents a trip.
ACCA Companies was founded in 1956 by Ernest (Pete) Sr. and Doris Popham.  The company started out as Pest Control and then moved into waterproofing.
“It rained and a (pest control) customer’s basement was under water, so Pete wanted to help them out by fixing their basement,” says Doris Popham on how they got into the basement waterproofing business.  Pete would do anything to help people, so he started to do more businesses and it became an out-of-house waterproofing company wearing his khaki on khaki uniform.  From the years on until 1974, ACCA Companies was run out of Pete and Doris’s home, where Doris Popham still lives today. In 1974 they bought the office that ACCA works out of today (4501 E Morgan Ave) across from Showplace Cinemas, back then it was not Showplace, it was a drive-in movie theater.
In 1959 and 1960, Pete and Doris celebrated the birth of their 2 kids, Joseph and LaQuita.  Joe and LaQuita attended St. Bens Grade School then Reitz Memorial High School.  Joe graduated in 1977 and attending Indiana State University.  LaQuita graduated from Memorial in 1978 and then attended University of Southern Indiana playing both basketball and softball of the university. In 1981, Joe started working at ACCA in the pest control and starting to work his way to selling waterproofing.  LaQuita started in 1983 doing office work and being a pest control tech.  In 1994, Pete retired and the business was handed over to Joe and LaQuita.  The business is still running in full force today with the same principles as they were when Pete started the company.

More Fun Facts
Joe and his wife, Mary, were blessed with their two kids in 1988 and 1990.  When they were still too young for school, Pete did not want them to go to daycare, they spent their time at the ACCA office beign watched but their aunt, LaQuita (who they still today call Nana) and their grandma, Doris.  They old toys are still at the office today.  Rachel and Paige attended Holy Rosary then Reitz Memorial High School.  Rachel graduated in 2007 from Memorial and will graduate from Ball State in Special Education this winter.  Paige graduated from Memorial in 2009, and is studying PR and Advertising at University of Southern Indiana while working at ACCA part-time in the office.  The family business continues.

TGIF

Thank Goodness It's Friday!
Are you thinking of buying or building a new house? Yes, it is always nice to look at the physical parts, the aspects of the house that people will see and make them feel like they are at home.  The homeowner will go for the things that make the home beautiful, but you have to remember what will make the house last longer.  One feature that will help is looking to make sure, if you are building, to protect your basement ahead of time, or if you are buying to look at the features of the basement.
Providing a coat on the basement walls and making sure they have a proper drain around the bottom of the foundation could really improve the lasting time of your home in the long run.  Your home would be a lot healthier, the air will be a lot cleaner when dry, and the value of your home could possibly go up.
Make sure you call ACCA for your free estimate on your basement or crawl space.

Wet Basement, No Good

Although having a wet or damp basement may not seem to affect you or your house directly, it does.  A wet or dump basement can cause problems throughout your house.  ACCA Basement Systems can recognize the problem and give you the right steps to have them fixed.
A wet basement can have a lot of effects on your home.  It can cause storage in your basement to get wet causing it to get fungi or become damaged.  The fungus can not only get in your storage but in your basement as well as the upper floors of your house.  The smell of your home and basement can also become ghastly.  The smell of fungi can be in your carpets and walls.
Having a wet basement can also cause you more money to heat and cool your house.  The damp air takes more energy to heat and cool your house.
If ACCA waterproofs your basement the allergens in your home could also go down because the damp and wet air causes more allergies.  Dust mites are the number one indoor allergen and they are caused by wet and dump basements.
There are a lot of benefits to getting your basement waterproofed.  The waterproofing will provide you with the benefits above however it will also provide you with more living space.

Different Foundations

Are you thinking about getting your basement waterproofed?  The different types of foundation of your house would determine the product ACCA would use to waterproof your basement.  There are 6 main types of foundation.
One type of foundation is poured concrete walls.  This is the most common among houses today.  The second type of foundation is concrete block walls, which were most frequent 1940-1975, but are still used today.  Another type is stone walls, which are most likely in older homes.  The fourth foundation type is monolithic foundation walls, which could be blocked or poured walls. Those four foundations are probably the most common ones in houses today, but they are also wood foundation walls and precast foundation walls.
If you call or e-mail ACCA to schedule your free estimate; our dealers, during your appointment, can farther explain to you want kind of foundation you have and what kind of waterproofing you would need for your home.

Bad Basement Air

ACCA Basements Systems specializes in basement waterproofing.  We create superior Basement Waterproofing products and performance that will eliminate your wet basement.  Why is basement waterproofing important? One reason is the Stack Effect.

What is the Stack Effect?   The Stack Effect is the effect the causes the air from your basement to rise to your upper floors.  It is simple when warm air rises and escapes your house, new air must replace the escaped air.  The air coming from your basement will rise and replace the escaped air, so you will be breathing in the air from your basement.  If there is fungus in the basement, then you are probably breathing in fungus on your first and second floor from your house. If your basement is wet, it could cause a problem with the air that you are breathing in.

It is best to keep your basement dry.  A dry basement could provide better breathing for you and your family; improve allergies, and overall health.  Stop the problem before the problem starts.

For more information on basement and crawl space waterproofing go to accabasement.com or call our office (812)479-8905 to schedule your free estimate!
